Fall's Furry Invaders: Protecting Your Harvest with Style

The perks of having a Georgia Tech Trained Architect on the Abundance Landscape’s Staff? We’ve been able to do some pretty incredible custom “squirrel cages” for our client’s gardens. There’s nothing more frustrating than putting hours into a garden just to have your efforts thwarted by a squirrel - that’s where we come in! Looking for aesthetically pleasing squirrel cages? The first four photos is a in Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta. This client has an incredible green thumb, and the squirrels took notice! Despite her best efforts, her makeshift squirrel protection was not a worth adversary to the furry soldiers that have taken over our city. We came in with a solution - a custom squirrel cage that she can actually walk into. The netting is designed to be almost invisible creating a subtle effect that doesn’t distract from the beauty of the garden. The netting is small enough to prohibit rodents from entering but large enough to allow pollinators like bees and butterflies to continue to pollinate her veggies. We also installed stone steps and a small brick wall to create a more formalized kitchen garden room. If the abundant garden is any indicator, I’d say this custom squirrel cage in Atlanta was a success!

The next four photos was the true architectural feat from our landscape designer and grower, Paul. This client in Buckhead wanted something that could be disassembled as needed, which was an interesting challenge for us, but Paul found an amazing solution that still matched the sophisticated aesthetic of this garden courtyard. These custom tomato cages sit flush on his stone raised garden beds. Each individual screen is removable so the gardeners can access the plants easily at any level. And, as promised, the structures can be disassembled and reassembled for the next tomato season. We used the same durable and discreet netting as the first squirrel cage to allow access for pollinators still!
